While David hides in the field, Jonathan puts their pre-arranged plan into motion to update him on King Saul's intentions. A young boy runs to find the first arrow exactly where it was meant to land [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג]. However, Jonathan intentionally shoots another arrow far beyond that initial target [רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Because the boy is walking ahead of him, Jonathan is able to call out after him [מצודת ציון], shouting that the arrow is further away.

This shout, which refers to the final arrow shot [מצודת דוד], is not truly meant for the boy. It is a secret message intended for David's ears. It serves as the agreed-upon signal that God is sending him away and that he must flee for his life immediately. Jonathan designed this complex warning system out of fear that other people might be present in the field, which would make a face-to-face meeting impossible. However, once Jonathan realizes the area is completely empty, he sends the boy back to the city. This action signals to David that the coast is clear, allowing him to safely emerge from his hiding place to thank Jonathan and say goodbye [רלב״ג].
