שמואל א, פרק כ׳, פסוק ט׳

I Samuel 20:9Sefaria

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן חָלִ֣ילָה לָּ֑ךְ כִּ֣י ׀ אִם־יָדֹ֣עַ אֵדַ֗ע כִּֽי־כָלְתָ֨ה הָרָעָ֜ה מֵעִ֤ם אָבִי֙ לָב֣וֹא עָלֶ֔יךָ וְלֹ֥א אֹתָ֖הּ אַגִּ֥יד לָֽךְ׃ {ס}

Faced with David's deep fears for his life, Jonathan seeks to calm his friend and declares his absolute loyalty. He assures David that he will not hide any of King Saul's intentions, fully honoring the bond they share.

Jonathan begins by firmly rejecting a certain line of thought. The primary approach among commentators is that Jonathan is protesting the very suspicion against him; he finds it unthinkable that David could ever suspect him of knowing about an impending danger and keeping it a secret [רש״י, רד״ק, רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, his reassurance connects directly to David's earlier plea to be killed if he is guilty of any wrongdoing. From this perspective, Jonathan is telling David to banish any thought that he carries a sin or guilt that would cause their covenant to be broken, or that would lead Jonathan to conceal his father's plans [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד, אלשיך].

Detailing the exact conditions under which he will issue a warning, Jonathan stresses the need for clear and absolute certainty. He will not merely alert David about his father's passing, momentary anger. Instead, he intends to verify beyond any doubt that the decision to harm David is final and that Saul truly intends to carry it out [אלשיך]. He will make certain that his father is actively preparing to bring that evil upon him [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Jonathan concludes his promise with a tone of astonishment, asking rhetorically if it is even possible that he would know of such a threat and remain silent. He makes it clear that he will undoubtedly share the information so that David can escape and save his own life [רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Furthermore, this commitment goes beyond a general warning. Jonathan promises to provide David with the exact details of the planned harm, ensuring he knows precisely what is being plotted against him [מלבי״ם].
