I Samuel 22:14Sefaria

Ahimelech stands before King Saul to deliver a carefully reasoned defense of his actions, explaining that his assistance to David was offered in complete innocence. The primary approach among commentators is that Ahimelech had absolutely no reason to suspect a rebellion. It was only natural for him to assume that David was acting on an urgent royal mission.

To support his innocence, Ahimelech presents four distinct reasons why the very idea of David rebelling was entirely illogical [מלבי״ם]. First, looking at his character, David is inherently loyal and not prone to betrayal. Second, regarding his family ties, David is the king's own son-in-law. He is a true member of the royal household rather than a descendant of enemies. Third, his established track record shows a man completely devoted to the king's service. David consistently placed himself under Saul's command and obeyed every order without a single flaw. Fourth, David held an esteemed and respected position within the palace. Because he had always been treated with dignity in the past [מנחת שי], the king had never given him a reason to feel humiliated. Therefore, David lacked any motive to rebel in search of lost honor.

Combining all these factors, Ahimelech argues that there was simply no warning sign to suggest David was a fugitive. Given David's steadfast loyalty, close family connection, flawless obedience, and secure reputation, Ahimelech provided help with the absolute certainty that David was simply carrying out King Saul's direct orders
