שמואל א, פרק כ״ב, פסוק י״ג

I Samuel 22:13Sefaria

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָו֙ שָׁא֔וּל לָ֚מָּה קְשַׁרְתֶּ֣ם עָלַ֔י אַתָּ֖ה וּבֶן־יִשָׁ֑י בְּתִתְּךָ֨ ל֜וֹ לֶ֣חֶם וְחֶ֗רֶב וְשָׁא֥וֹל לוֹ֙ בֵּֽאלֹהִ֔ים לָק֥וּם אֵלַ֛י לְאֹרֵ֖ב כַּיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃ {ס}

Saul’s harsh accusation against Ahimelech the priest outlines a deliberate path of treason, constructed from a series of actions meant to assist David. According to Saul, the mere act of providing David with supplies was absolute proof that the priest was a willing partner in a conspiracy against the throne [מצודת דוד]. When detailing these traitorous acts, Saul intentionally ignores the actual chronological order of events. Instead, he arranges the priest's alleged crimes from the lightest offense to the most severe. He begins with the giving of bread, escalates to the handing over of a sword, and culminates with what he considers the ultimate betrayal—inquiring of God on David's behalf [מלבי״ם].

The act of seeking divine guidance for David carries significant weight and is understood in two primary ways. On a basic level, the priest simply consulted the Urim and Thummim to help guide David on the safest path as he fled [רד״ק]. However, a deeper perspective suggests that by utilizing this sacred oracle, Ahimelech essentially treated David as the rightful ruler. Such divine inquiries were never performed for ordinary citizens; they were exclusively reserved for a king, the head of the high court, or an individual whose leadership was vital to the entire nation [רש״י, רד״ק].

In Saul's mind, the ultimate purpose behind all of these supportive actions was to enable David to rise up and lay an ambush against him. Saul views this rebellion not as a distant or theoretical threat, but as an active, executed plot that has already become an undeniable, accomplished fact [מלבי״ם].
