David's military campaigns were marked by a strategy of total warfare combined with highly calculated conduct. When attacking various regions, David and his men conquered the settlements without leaving a single person alive. He intentionally avoided taking captives from the local population to use as slaves [מלבי״ם]. Instead, his efforts were entirely focused on looting property, gathering all the remaining livestock and clothing.

Following these raids, David maintained a consistent pattern of behavior. After returning from a campaign, he made it a point to regularly visit Achish to deliver a report of his activities [מלבי״ם]. During these meetings, it is highly likely that David also presented him with a portion of the plundered spoils [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
