The messenger reasons that the Philistines will certainly kill David out of deep hatred to avenge the death of Goliath. This assessment brings a sense of relief to Saul, calming his mind [חומת אנך].

As a result, the king abandons his pursuit. On a practical level, the chase ends simply because Saul's military reach does not extend into Philistine territory, leaving him powerless to operate there [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
