David's arrival in Gath with his men and their families marks a significant shift in his relationship with the Philistines. During a previous encounter, David arrived alone, which caused Achish to worry that he might easily flee. Now, however, the arrival of each man along with his entire household clearly signals an intention to settle down permanently. This visible commitment puts Achish's fears to rest [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Among those settling with David are his two wives, Ahinoam and Abigail. Ahinoam was likely his first wife, having been with him since his early days of wandering [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The order in which the wives are introduced, with Ahinoam preceding Abigail, draws attention. One approach suggests this order reflects their marital history; Ahinoam married David without having a prior husband, whereas Abigail was previously married [כלי יקר, מובא בחומת אנך].

Another perspective suggests the order serves to protect and highlight Ahinoam's reputation. Abigail was already widely famous for her greatness as a wise, beautiful woman and a prophetess who saved David from bloodshed. If Abigail had been introduced first, Ahinoam's own significance might have been overshadowed. By placing Ahinoam first, the narrative establishes that she, too, is a highly important figure. Furthermore, the mention of Abigail's past marriage to Nabal is not intended as a criticism. Rather, it emphasizes her remarkable journey, highlighting her rescue from a wicked man and her subsequent rise to become the wife of a pious king [חומת אנך].
