Early in the morning, a striking scene revealed God's absolute dominance over the gods of the nations. The Philistines awoke to find their idol, Dagon, thrown to the ground. This event unfolded under the cover of darkness and was only discovered at dawn. The timing was deliberate, serving to emphasize the defeat of impure forces specifically during the night, which is traditionally considered the time of their greatest power and control [חומת אנך].

The idol was found lying flat on its face [רד״ק, מצודת דוד], positioned in a way that made it appear as though Dagon was bowing in complete submission before the Ark of God [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The very mechanics of how the idol landed highlighted the miraculous nature of the event. Originally, the idol and the Ark stood side-by-side, both facing the entrance of the building. If the idol had simply tipped forward naturally, it would have landed facing the doorway. If it had fallen toward the Ark next to it, it would have landed on its side. The fact that Dagon fell forward onto its face while simultaneously turning to face the Ark proved this was no random accident. Furthermore, the idol was not merely knocked over but completely uprooted and displaced. This is evident because the Philistines had to physically return it to its original spot, rather than just standing it back up where it fell [מלבי״ם].

Despite this open miracle performed to honor God and prove that there is none besides Him, the Philistines completely missed the message. They assumed the event was nothing more than a random accident or a strange coincidence. As a result, they simply propped the idol back up and returned it to its place, making no effort to remove the Ark of God from their temple [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
