Isaiah 29:20Sefaria

A profound shift in the social order is on the horizon, bringing joy to the humble and lowly. For a long time, arrogant and wicked figures silenced the righteous, preventing them from speaking out or offering correction [רד״ק]. However, a new reality will soon emerge in which these social dynamics are completely reversed. The proud will be brought low [ביאור שטיינזלץ], and the living obstacles that caused the people to stumble will be entirely removed.

Three distinct groups of sinners have actively distanced the people from God, and their reign is now coming to an end [מלבי״ם]. The first group consists of ruthless tyrants. These are aggressive, forceful individuals who are deeply entrenched in their wickedness They have exploited their positions of power to force the public into idol worship [מלבי״ם]. Soon, they will completely fade away, disappearing as surely as a spent supply of money

The second group is made up of scoffers. These wicked individuals incite the masses by openly mocking and ridiculing God In a deeper sense, the scoffer represents the absolute opposite of a wise person, because true wisdom is measured not merely by a sharp memory, but by good deeds and an understanding heart [שד״ל].

The third group consists of those who actively seek out opportunities for evil. They perform dishonest acts in public, serving as a negative example for everyone else They do not just stumble into wrongdoing; rather, they are quick, diligent, and deeply invested in their sins They sit and carefully calculate exactly how to execute their malicious plans, rushing to bring them to life [רש״י, רד״ק].

As for how these corrupt figures will disappear from society, the primary approach among commentators is that they will face total physical destruction and annihilation [מצודת דוד]. However, a more moderate perspective suggests that God may not physically destroy them. Instead, as the new reality unfolds, these wrongdoers might witness the change and repent from their ways. At the very least, they will be stripped of their power and influence, no longer able to act on their wicked desires as they once did [שד״ל].
