מַחֲטִיאֵ֤י אָדָם֙ בְּדָבָ֔ר וְלַמּוֹכִ֥יחַ בַּשַּׁ֖עַר יְקֹשׁ֑וּן וַיַּטּ֥וּ בַתֹּ֖הוּ צַדִּֽיק׃ {פ}

Wicked and deceitful individuals are destined to be removed from the world, but their corrupt tactics against people of truth and justice follow specific, destructive patterns. These individuals often weaponize speech to achieve their goals. One perspective suggests they act like false prophets, using mockery and deceptive arguments to mislead the public and cause them to sin [רש״י, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, their malice is directed at anyone who challenges them. They closely monitor the words of others, waiting to catch them in a mistake to frame them with false accusations. When honest individuals attempt to correct their behavior, the wicked twist the situation, treating the moral correction itself as a crime [אבן עזרא, שד״ל, רד״ק].

Their hostility is especially focused on those who demand accountability in public spaces. Historically, the city gate was the center of public, commercial, and legal life, serving as the gathering place for judges and leaders [מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that the wicked actively set traps and plot false charges to trip up anyone who stands in this central square to rebuke the community [רש״י, מצודת ציון, רד״ק, שד״ל, אבן עזרא, שטיינזלץ]. Another interpretation offers a different metaphor, comparing their actions to gathering straw. Just as one collects scattered pieces of straw, these corrupt people gather past mistakes and personal flaws of the person correcting them. They then hurl these insults back at their critics to publicly shame them and invalidate their message [רד״ק, אבן עזרא].

Ultimately, the goal of these deceitful individuals is to derail the righteous using complete falsehoods and empty claims that hold no real substance [מצודת ציון, רד״ק, שטיינזלץ]. This disruption takes several forms. It often occurs as a corruption of the legal system, where the wicked use lies and fabricated plots to secure a guilty verdict against an innocent person, seeking to destroy them [רש״י, מלבי״ם]. From a spiritual standpoint, it involves trying to steer the righteous away from the correct path through the heavy use of vain and deceptive words [מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ]. Finally, the impact can be physical and social. Through intimidation and fear, the wicked force the righteous to abandon their rightful places in society, driving them off the main path to wander in isolated and desolate places [שד״ל].
