News of the actions taken by Ishmael son of Nethaniah spreads, eventually reaching the ears of the army commanders. Johanan son of Kareah receives the report wherever he happens to be staying at the time, showing that he was not present in Mizpah during the event itself [מצודת דוד].

Johanan and the military officers are able to learn of these events before it is too late entirely due to Ishmael's slow pace of travel. His journey is severely delayed because he is weighed down by a heavy burden of stolen goods, along with numerous male and female captives, making his progress extremely slow [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
