ירמיהו, פרק מ״א, פסוק ד׳

Jeremiah 41:4Sefaria

וַיְהִ֛י בַּיּ֥וֹם הַשֵּׁנִ֖י לְהָמִ֣ית אֶת־גְּדַלְיָ֑הוּ וְאִ֖ישׁ לֹ֥א יָדָֽע׃

The day following the assassination of Gedaliah brings a tense, secretive silence over Mizpah. The passage of time to the second day acts as a dark prelude to the tragedies that are about to unfold [מצודת דוד]. A heavy veil of secrecy surrounds the murder, maintained through both circumstance and deliberate calculation. On a practical level, Ishmael eliminated Gedaliah's guards and took the remaining survivors captive, ensuring no one was left to spread the news. Furthermore, the assassination likely took place on the Jewish New Year, a time when people naturally avoided traveling [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Beyond mere circumstance, the silence was a calculated move. Ishmael actively worked to hide the murder, a choice that highlights his deep cruelty and wickedness [אברבנאל]. His goal in concealing the crime was to buy enough time to fabricate a lie, planning to eventually claim that he had executed Gedaliah through lawful and just means [מלבי״ם].

This deliberate cover-up directly paved the way for another slaughter. Because the news had not leaked, eighty men journeyed from Shechem, Shiloh, and Samaria. These men were deep in mourning over the destruction of Jerusalem and the burning of the Temple. Having heard about Gedaliah's new leadership and the gathering of the Jewish community around him, they arrived intending to bring an offering to the ruined House of God. Completely unaware that the leader was already dead, they walked right into danger. Their lack of knowledge allowed Ishmael to greet them with fake tears, lure them into a trap, and murder them as well [אברבנאל, מלבי״ם].
