A group of captives, taken entirely against their will, suddenly finds a perfect opportunity to escape. Commentators agree on the exact sequence of events that follows. The people held in captivity physically turn around in the opposite direction, turning their backs on their kidnapper, Ishmael. In a unified movement, they abandon him completely and cross over to the side of the rescue force. The entire group joins Johanan son of Kareah, choosing to follow his lead to safety.
