During times of severe crisis, when a person's life hangs in the balance, a fateful trial unfolds in the heavenly court. A spiritual and legal battle takes place over the fate of the human soul, pitting a massive array of accusers against a single defender.

The primary approach among commentators is that during this moment of judgment, a thousand angels of death and accusers stand against the individual, recalling their wrongdoings and demanding their life. Yet, against this overwhelming force, the presence of just one defending angel is enough to secure salvation. The stark contrast of one against a thousand highlights the immense gap between the multitude of prosecuting forces and the lone defender who steps forward to protect the person [רש״י, מצודת דוד, רמב״ן, אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

While some view these figures as literal angels, another perspective suggests that the defending angel actually represents the person's own actions. According to this view, every commandment a person fulfills transforms into a spiritual guardian [אלשיך]. In this context, the ratio of one to a thousand takes on a different meaning. It may indicate that the individual fulfilled only a single commandment out of the thousands of opportunities God provided [מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, it could mean that out of a thousand commandments performed, only one was done with absolute integrity and completely free of personal motives [אלשיך]. Regardless, that single, pure act is powerful enough to act as a defender and save the person from death.

The purpose of this guardian is to declare the person's uprightness. Rather than speaking directly to the individual, the angel speaks on their behalf, presenting their case before the heavenly court [רמב״ן, אבן עזרא, תקות אנוש, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The defense focuses on the person's unique integrity, which is measured carefully and personally according to their specific spiritual level and individual traits [אלשיך]. However, this grace of heavenly defense is not an absolute guarantee for everyone, as it occurs only in special circumstances [תקות אנוש].
