At a critical moment in the heavenly court, the strict attribute of justice can suddenly give way to profound mercy. A person standing on the very edge of death may experience an unexpected rescue. This scene demonstrates the immense power of a single good deed to tip the scales in favor of life, even when countless accusers demand punishment.

The rescue begins with an outpouring of divine compassion. The primary approach among commentators is that God directly pities the suffering individual and extends His kindness to them [רש״י, רמב״ן, אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective suggests that God grants favor specifically to the defending angel advocating on the person's behalf [אלשיך]. Following this moment of grace, God commands the defending angel to step in and redeem the individual from the agents of death [רמב״ן, תקות אנוש], actively saving them and preventing their descent into the grave [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם].

This deliverance is made possible because God declares that a valid ransom or atonement has been found for the person's wrongdoings. The primary approach explains that the individual's own uprightness and past merits serve as this spiritual ransom. This reality highlights God's abundant mercy, because one single merit and one defending angel hold enough weight to overcome a thousand accusing angels seeking the person's downfall [מצודת דוד, רמב״ן, מלבי״ם].
