Job 33:16Sefaria

God communicates with humanity through various channels to warn them, correct their paths, and prevent them from committing wrongs. This divine intervention often begins in the quiet of the night through visions, progressing into a deeper internal or external awakening. During these nighttime experiences, God opens human awareness, revealing His word or a heavenly decree tailored to the individual The primary purpose of this revelation is preventive. God seeks to warn a person before a sin is committed, much like He did when He appeared to Abimelech in a dream to stop him from doing wrong [רש״י, רמב״ן]. In these moments, God presents individuals with a reflection of their own actions, alongside the exact, measure-for-measure consequences that await them [מצודת דוד].

After the initial warning, the divine message must be completed or finalized, acting as a seal or an engraved decree Commentators differ on how this final stage of communication takes shape. The primary approach among commentators is that this completion comes in the form of physical suffering, pain, or imprisonment. If a person ignores the warning of the dream and fails to change their ways, God finalizes His message by bringing about hardships that directly correspond to the person's misdeeds. This is done to teach a lesson and guide them toward correction This stage of suffering serves as the ultimate seal, marking the end of God's attempts to reach the individual through dreams [אלשיך].

In contrast to the idea of physical pain, another perspective suggests that this completion occurs through the power of human conscience. The dream awakens a person's inner moral compass, which then verifies and seals the divine message. The individual feels a deep, undeniable certainty that they have done wrong and received a heavenly warning, leaving the lesson firmly engraved on their heart [מלבי״ם]. A completely different interpretation views this process not as a personal lesson, but as direct divine intervention. In this view, God actively watches over human plans, and when people plot evil, He steps in to block and ultimately cancel the harmful actions they are so determined to carry out [תקות אנוש].
