יהושע, פרק ב׳, פסוק י״א

Joshua 2:11Sefaria

Rahab’s confession to the Israelite spies exposes the deep psychological breakdown of the Canaanite people. Her words fulfill the very purpose of the spies' mission, as they hear firsthand about the overwhelming terror gripping the entire region [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The reaction of the local inhabitants is highly unusual for a nation facing an impending war. Typically, rumors of an approaching army spark initial fear, but as the enemy reaches the border, the defending citizens awaken, gather courage, and unite to fight back. In this case, however, the initial dread completely paralyzed the population, and even as the Israelites drew near, their deep despair never lifted [מלבי״ם]. This represents a total collapse of morale and bravery. The overwhelming fear caused the people's spirit to become low and degraded [מצודת דוד], with their courage vanishing completely [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The depth of this paralysis was so severe that the men lost their most basic vital strength, even to the point of losing the physical ability to engage in marital relations [רש״י].

Rahab clarifies the true source of this paralyzing terror. The cowardice of the Canaanites does not stem from a fear of the Israelites' military might or human bravery, but rather from a clear recognition of God's power [אברבנאל]. The people understand that absolute capability rests in His hands and that He controls everything [מצודת דוד]. Because God rules over both heaven and earth, He is able to command all natural systems and defeat any force that stands against Israel [רלב״ג]. Facing a God with such immense power, the local residents realize that any attempt to fight back is doomed to fail from the very beginning [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל].
