וְהַחֲיִתֶ֞ם אֶת־אָבִ֣י וְאֶת־אִמִּ֗י וְאֶת־אַחַי֙ וְאֶת־[אַחְיוֹתַ֔י] (אחותי) וְאֵ֖ת כׇּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר לָהֶ֑ם וְהִצַּלְתֶּ֥ם אֶת־נַפְשֹׁתֵ֖ינוּ מִמָּֽוֶת׃

Rahab approaches the men she has just sheltered with a carefully measured plea for survival. Having risked her own safety to protect two strangers, she asks for a proportional return: the preservation of her extended family [אברבנאל]. The specific relatives she lists—her father, mother, brothers, and sisters—reflect her unique personal reality. Without a husband or children of her own, her parents and siblings serve as her core family unit, effectively taking the place of a spouse and offspring [אברבנאל, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Her plea operates on two distinct levels. First, she asks the spies for a direct guarantee that they will not harm her family themselves. Second, she places an active responsibility on them to shield her relatives from being killed by anyone else during the coming invasion [מלבי״ם]. In making this urgent request, she completely abandons any hope of preserving their homes, wealth, or physical property, focusing entirely on the bare survival of their lives [אברבנאל].

This agreement raises a significant question: how could the spies promise to spare Canaanite residents, an act that seemingly contradicts the direct command of God? The answer lies in a profound spiritual commitment woven into her request. Beyond asking for physical safety, her plea to save their souls from death represents a desire for spiritual rescue through conversion. She declares that her family is ready to abandon their former beliefs—which held that the human soul perishes alongside the physical body—and embrace a new faith. By accepting this offer, the spies do not violate the command of God. Rather, they earn the merit of welcoming sincere converts, gathering new souls just as Abraham once did [מלבי״ם, אלשיך, אהבת יהונתן].
