וְהָיָ֡ה כֹּ֣ל אֲשֶׁר־יֵצֵא֩ מִדַּלְתֵ֨י בֵיתֵ֧ךְ ׀ הַח֛וּצָה דָּמ֥וֹ בְרֹאשׁ֖וֹ וַאֲנַ֣חְנוּ נְקִיִּ֑ם וְ֠כֹ֠ל אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִֽהְיֶ֤ה אִתָּךְ֙ בַּבַּ֔יִת דָּמ֣וֹ בְרֹאשֵׁ֔נוּ אִם־יָ֖ד תִּֽהְיֶה־בּֽוֹ׃

During the impending conquest of Jericho, a clear and absolute physical boundary is established for survival. A single house serves as the only safe haven amidst the chaos of battle. This sharp divide between the inside of the home and the outside world is rooted not only in practical security but also in a profound spiritual reality. The entire city of Jericho is condemned to complete destruction because it is a place of deep impurity. However, Rahab's home, built into the thickness of the city wall, is uniquely excluded from this impurity. Stepping out of the house is not merely a physical risk; it is a direct entry into a condemned zone of destruction [אהבת יהונתן].

Because of this strict boundary, anyone who chooses to leave the safety of the house assumes full responsibility for their own fate. The primary approach among commentators is that such a person is entirely to blame for their own death. By failing to protect themselves and wandering out into the dangers of war, they bring about their own demise. In such a scenario, the spies declare themselves completely free of guilt, as it is impossible to protect someone who willingly walks into the battlefield [מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ].

Conversely, a completely different standard applies to anyone who remains sheltered inside the home. For these individuals, the spies accept absolute responsibility. They declare that if any harm comes to someone who stayed within the protected walls, the guilt and blame for that death will fall squarely upon the spies themselves [רש״י, שטיינזלץ].
