The deep influence of the surrounding nations becomes glaringly apparent as the Israelites adopt a wide variety of foreign practices [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The extent of this spiritual assimilation is so vast that they take on exactly seven distinct forms of idol worship from their neighbors [רש״י].

The climax of this spiritual crisis is a complete and absolute disconnection from God. In previous eras, the Israelites often attempted to blend their beliefs, serving God alongside various local idols. However, the primary approach among commentators is that this specific period is defined by a total abandonment. The people do not maintain even a partnered or secondary worship of God. Instead, they direct all their devotion and rituals exclusively toward foreign deities, leaving Him behind entirely.
