God reminds the Israelites of His continuous kindness to correct a potential misunderstanding. He wants to ensure they do not mistakenly believe that His wonders and acts of salvation were confined only to the distant past. Instead, He emphasizes that even in more recent generations, whenever various nations rose up against them, He faithfully stood by their side [מלבי״ם].
During these conflicts, the Israelites faced hostility from several groups, including a specific nation or tribe known as Maon [רש י וביאור שטיינזלץ]. The intense oppression they suffered did not come solely from this group, the Sidonians, and Amalek, but was a culmination of torment inflicted by other hostile nations who had previously attacked them. Crushed by this overwhelming pressure from their enemies, the Israelites cried out to God. In response to their desperate plea, He immediately stepped in and saved them from their attackers [מצודת דוד].
