Facing a major battle brings natural tension, and a leader might experience moments of doubt before an attack. To address this, a practical alternative is offered. If there is still a sense of hesitation [ביאור שטיינזלץ], or a real fear of going down to engage the enemy in combat [מצודת דוד], a different course of action is advised.

Instead of charging into the fight, the instruction is to take a servant named Purah and approach the Midianite camp together [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This descent into enemy territory is not meant for battle. The sole purpose is simply to listen to what the enemy soldiers are saying [מצודת דוד].
