Deep within the enemy camp, a vivid dream and its immediate interpretation expose the hidden anxieties of a massive army facing a seemingly insignificant force. The conversation between two soldiers reveals how an unlikely challenger is destined to overthrow a mighty power.

The decisive reaction of the soldier hearing the dream indicates his absolute certainty; he believes there is no other possible meaning to the vision [מצודת דוד]. In this dream, a simple, cheap loaf of barley bread represents Gideon. Even though the Midianites had likely heard rumors of Gideon gathering troops, they did not take him seriously or view him as a threat. Yet, the imagery illustrates a profound reversal. Just as a small, light loaf of bread manages to completely overturn a sturdy tent, a seemingly small and insignificant force led by the weak Gideon will cause a massive upheaval and defeat the powerful enemy camp [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Beyond the simple symbolism, there is a deeper spiritual dimension to the soldier's exact words. Rather than stemming merely from his own understanding, God placed these specific words into the soldier's mouth to address a fundamental question. At that time, both the Israelites and the Midianites were tainted by the sin of idol worship, making it difficult to understand how Israel could merit a victory. The explanation rests on the fact that the triumph will not be achieved through the collective merit of the Israelites, but strictly through Gideon's sword. God recognized Gideon as the sole righteous person of His generation, and for this reason alone, He chose to deliver the enemy into his hand [אלשיך]. Reflecting this unique and elevated status, Gideon is described with a title that specifically denotes a person of great importance and stature [מצודת ציון].
