Judges 7:5Sefaria

Gideon leads his army to the water's edge, where a simple physical action serves as a profound test of character and faith. God instructs him to divide the men based entirely on how they satisfy their thirst. The separation relies on two distinct drinking methods. One group kneels directly on the ground [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. By getting down on their knees right next to the stream, these men put their lips to the surface and fill their mouths with water The other group remains upright or merely leans over, scooping water into their hands. Because they cannot drink normally from their cupped hands, they must lap the water with their tongues, much like a dog

Why are the men who lap the water from their hands chosen to continue into battle? Commentators offer two complementary explanations, blending spiritual purity with military readiness. From a spiritual perspective, the act of kneeling reveals a deeply ingrained, corrupt habit. Dropping to the knees exposes a familiarity with bowing down to idols, specifically the idol Baal. In contrast, the men who stand and lap the water from their hands prove they have never bowed to Baal. Because of this spiritual integrity, they are the ones selected to bring salvation to Israel

Beyond spiritual purity, the test also evaluates the fighters' character and combat readiness. Dropping to the knees to gulp directly from the stream suggests laziness, physical weakness, or a gluttonous urge to consume a large amount of water at once. On the other hand, quickly scooping water and bringing it to the mouth demonstrates agility, bravery, and a state of high alert. An earlier trial had already removed the fearful and those burdened by sin; this water test serves to eliminate the lazy. Ultimately, the process leaves behind only the most righteous, alert, and capable warriors ready for the impending battle
