The upcoming battle against Midian takes an unexpected turn when the vast majority of the army is dismissed, leaving the fate of the nation in the hands of a remarkably small group. God informs Gideon that the impending victory and salvation will be achieved exclusively through three hundred specific men who drank from the water by lapping it. The rest of the gathered army, having not been selected, is released to return home [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This specific selection process is not random. God deliberately chooses the men who lapped the water while rejecting those who dropped to their knees to drink. The physical act of kneeling reveals a habit of bowing down to idols. By choosing to lap the water instead, this small group proves they are not accustomed to the physical postures of idol worship. Because they have kept themselves free from these practices, they alone are deemed worthy to bring about salvation and secure the victory over Midian [מצודת דוד].
