A sudden shift from natural happiness to deep mourning highlights a profound double loss, affecting both the daily and spiritual realities of the people. On a basic level, all joy has simply faded away, and lively dances of celebration have been replaced by cries of grief [ביאור שטיינזלץ, צאינה וראינה].

This loss of happiness is deeply tied to the destruction of religious life centered around the Temple. The end of joy reflects the stopping of the sacrifices. The dancing that turned into sadness specifically points to the singers and dancers who once took an active part in the holy service, whose sacred roles were suddenly cut short [אבן עזרא].

Looking deeper, the true source of this mourning is not simply the pain of exile or the sight of wicked people living in peace. In fact, witnessing the success of the wicked could theoretically offer a small measure of comfort. If God grants such abundance to those who ignore His will, He will surely give great rewards to those who follow it. Because of this logic, there might still be a reason to find some joy even in difficult times. However, the primary reason for such overwhelming sadness is the departure of the Holy Spirit from the people. It is the loss of this direct, intimate spiritual connection with God that truly destroyed all happiness, turning celebration into absolute mourning [אלון בכות].
