ויקרא, פרק כ״ג, פסוק כ״ה

פרשת אמור

Leviticus 23:25Sefaria

כׇּל־מְלֶ֥אכֶת עֲבֹדָ֖ה לֹ֣א תַעֲשׂ֑וּ וְהִקְרַבְתֶּ֥ם אִשֶּׁ֖ה לַיהֹוָֽה׃ {ס}

Stepping away from the demands of daily life on a holiday provides a rare opportunity to pause and reconnect with deeper spiritual values. The requirement to halt regular work and bring sacrifices is intentionally designed to break the endless cycle of daily labor. This creates the necessary free time for inward reflection and a return to God. Rather than being a heavy or sad period of self-judgment, this call for soul-searching is joyful and uplifting, serving as an open invitation to draw closer to Him [רש"ר הירש].

The restriction on labor is highly specific, applying only to regular, routine work. Tasks required for preparing food remain entirely permitted. This exception is a deliberate feature meant to enhance the uplifting atmosphere and contribute directly to the joy of the day [רש"ר הירש]. Furthermore, because the restriction focuses squarely on physical labor, actions that require skill or wisdom rather than physical exertion, such as sounding a ram's horn or removing baked bread from an oven, are technically permitted by the Torah's strict law. While later sages restricted these actions, they did so only out of caution to prevent people from accidentally crossing the line into forbidden work [תורה תמימה].

Alongside the command to rest, there is an instruction to present a fire offering to God. The primary approach among commentators is that this refers to the special additional holiday sacrifices detailed elsewhere in the Torah. The broad instruction to simply bring a fire offering carries an important practical rule regarding these offerings. The various types of animals required do not depend on one another. If one specific type of animal is unavailable, the available animals can still be offered, successfully fulfilling the overall command to bring the holiday sacrifice [רלב"ג].
