The census of the residents highlights a specific group of one hundred and twenty-eight mighty warriors. These men were the brothers of the leaders of the ancestral households [מצודת דוד].

To manage this group, an overseer was appointed to take charge of them [רש״י]. The man chosen for this leadership role was Zabdiel. He is introduced with a distinct description that is understood in two different ways. He may have been the son of a great and prominent man, carrying forward a family of high status [אבן עזרא]. On the other hand, rather than pointing to his family background, this description might simply be his actual given name or a unique personal title [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
