וּבִֽירוּשָׁלַ֙͏ִם֙ יָֽשְׁב֔וּ מִבְּנֵ֥י יְהוּדָ֖ה וּמִבְּנֵ֣י בִנְיָמִ֑ן מִבְּנֵ֣י יְ֠הוּדָ֠ה עֲתָיָ֨ה בֶן־עֻזִּיָּ֜ה בֶּן־זְכַרְיָ֧ה בֶן־אֲמַרְיָ֛ה בֶּן־שְׁפַטְיָ֥ה בֶן־מַהֲלַלְאֵ֖ל מִבְּנֵי־פָֽרֶץ׃

Following the return from exile, the repopulation of Jerusalem relied heavily on specific groups, with the primary settlement consisting of members from the tribes of Judah and Benjamin [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. While other groups existed, the Ten Tribes are noticeably absent from this account. Only a handful of individuals from those tribes actually settled in the city, making their numbers too small to warrant inclusion, even though their presence is acknowledged in a parallel record in the Book of Chronicles [מצודת דוד]. This omission of tribes such as Ephraim and Manasseh is an intentional editorial decision. Because their presence was already documented in previous historical records, the current account avoids repeating known information and instead chooses to build upon it [מלבי״ם].

The record then details exactly who from the tribe of Judah took up residence in Jerusalem. Rather than providing a complete census of every inhabitant, the genealogy highlights only the most prominent and important figures [רש״י].

When comparing this specific lineage—tracing a key figure back to Perez, the son of Judah—with the parallel account in the Book of Chronicles, certain differences and gaps emerge. These apparent contradictions exist because the current record is designed to supplement the older documents. The earlier account listed only four generations and skipped the rest. However, a more detailed genealogical registry was later discovered, containing the names of additional significant individuals. Consequently, this updated list includes certain ancestors who were previously left out, while still omitting the names of intermediate generations who lacked historical prominence [מלבי״ם].
