When the representative of the tribe of Judah is chosen for the scouting mission, he is introduced with a name that directly reflects his character and his strength in facing a difficult test. According to interpretive tradition, this man's original identity was Caleb the son of Hezron. The famous title attached to him, Jephunneh, does not actually identify his father. Rather, it is a descriptive label he earned through his actions. He received this specific title because he deliberately turned away and distanced himself from the harmful advice of the other spies [חזקוני, צאינה וראינה].
