תהלים, פרק י״ב, פסוק א׳

Psalms 12:1Sefaria

לַמְנַצֵּ֥חַ עַֽל־הַשְּׁמִינִ֗ית מִזְמ֥וֹר לְדָוִֽד׃

A spiritual cry often arises from the depths of a hostile environment, deep betrayal, or an overwhelming sense of emptiness. Though introduced with a musical direction, the opening of this psalm sets the stage for confronting complex social and personal struggles.

The historical background of this plea is understood in several ways. It can be viewed as a divinely inspired prophecy looking ahead to a future generation where the wicked overpower the poor and the weak [רד״ק]. Alternatively, it may be rooted in David's own era, directed at arrogant individuals who spread harmful gossip, spoke proudly against God, distorted His teachings, and stirred up conflict among people [מלבי״ם]. Taking a more personal perspective, the setting might reflect David's painful experiences with allies who promised him their loyalty, only to betray him and hand him over to King Saul [מאירי].

The opening reference to an eighth element carries both practical and spiritual meanings. On a practical level, it points to an eight-stringed musical instrument [רש״י, אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. It might also indicate a specific melody, a poem, or the eighth distinct tune produced by that very instrument [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Beyond the musical realm, a deeper tradition connects this numerical detail to the commandment of circumcision, which is performed on the eighth day of life. According to this account, King David was once in a bathhouse. Seeing himself completely unclothed, he was filled with sadness at the thought that he was standing without any of God's commandments. However, the moment he noticed the mark of circumcision on his body, he was deeply comforted. Upon leaving, he composed this psalm as an expression of profound gratitude for that enduring commandment [תורה תמימה].
