Psalms 12:5Sefaria

Arrogant individuals often wield their words as weapons to gain power, completely dismissing moral boundaries and higher authority. They boast about the sheer force of their speech, confident that they can use their language as a tool to overpower and defeat anyone in their path Other perspectives suggest they act simply for the sake of their own words [רד"ק, אבן עזרא], or that they merely seek to amplify the raw strength of their speech as much as they desire [מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This boasting extends to a feeling of absolute control over their communication. They take pride in the fact that their lips are entirely their own, allowing them to threaten, deceive, and speak lies that completely contradict their true feelings. They do this with the conviction that no one can discover their hidden thoughts A contrasting view frames this attitude as the excuse of flatterers. These individuals claim their smooth words are expressions of genuine love, arguing that since they control their own lips, no one is forcing them to offer false praise. In reality, these are empty lies that fail to fool anyone, as it is clear to all that their words lack substance [אלשיך].

The ultimate expression of their pride is the belief that they answer to no one, confident that no authority can silence them or force them to speak the truth Beyond mere social arrogance, this mindset represents profound heresy. The Sages teach that speaking evil gossip is equivalent to rejecting the core of faith and denying the very existence of God [תורה תמימה].

Ultimately, this arrogant speech creates a double offense, damaging both faith and society. By empowering their tongues, these individuals use false claims to deny Divine providence, acting as though they have no Master in heaven. At the same time, by claiming total ownership of their lips, they harm others through deceit and harmful gossip, fully believing they have no master on earth who can stop them [מלבי"ם].
