תהלים, פרק קכ״א, פסוק ב׳

Psalms 121:2Sefaria

עֶ֭זְרִי מֵעִ֣ם יְהֹוָ֑ה עֹ֝שֵׂ֗ה שָׁמַ֥יִם וָאָֽרֶץ׃

When facing great challenges, human instinct often searches for physical solutions or earthly armies. Yet, true security is discovered only when a person realizes that genuine support comes from divine providence rather than human strength. This recognition stems directly from understanding the greatness of the Creator, who rules over every dimension of reality.

The primary approach among commentators is that this realization completely rejects any reliance on human help. Whether spoken through a spirit of prophecy or as an expression of profound hope [אבן עזרא], the core understanding is that true salvation exists nowhere else but with God [מצודת דוד]. Even in moments when physical forces seem entirely absent or powerless to assist, a person can confidently rely on the fact that ultimate power and governance over the entire world rest strictly in His hands [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Acknowledging God as the creator of heaven and earth emphasizes His absolute power to alter the laws of creation at His will and to perform wonders [מאירי]. Beyond raw power, this reflects exactly how divine providence operates within the world. The earth represents the standard system of nature, while the heavens represent miraculous, supernatural guidance. Divine help seamlessly blends these two realms together. What might appear to a person as a completely normal, earthly occurrence is, in truth, the direct result of supreme heavenly providence [מלבי״ם].

Furthermore, this creative power is an ongoing, continuous action. God is not merely the one who formed the physical world in the distant past. Rather, He creates a new heaven and a new earth every single day in the spiritual realm, building a reality formed through the study of Torah. These spiritual worlds are designed as a reward for those who fulfill His will. Because this creative process is constant, it serves as a guarantee that divine assistance will never stop and that the future of Israel is eternally secure [אלשיך].
