תהלים, פרק קכ״ד, פסוק ד׳

Psalms 124:4Sefaria

אֲ֭זַי הַמַּ֣יִם שְׁטָפ֑וּנוּ נַ֝֗חְלָה עָבַ֥ר עַל־נַפְשֵֽׁנוּ׃

A severe existential threat often feels like a destructive flood, an unstoppable force ready to sweep away everything in its path. The primary approach among commentators is that this rushing water represents a multitude of enemies and the many troubles rising to destroy the Israelites. It serves as a powerful image of a massive current threatening to drown them completely. However, [מלבי״ם] presents a completely different perspective, explaining that this flood does not represent a physical threat of destruction, but rather the danger of assimilation. In his view, the greatest peril arises not when nations seek to destroy the Israelites in anger, but when they attempt to embrace them and absorb them into a single, unified culture.

When picturing this overwhelming force, the primary approach among commentators is to view it as a fierce, rushing river. Yet, [רש״י] understands this threat as a form of sickness and illness. Connecting this concept to the events of the Book of Esther, [אלשיך] explains that the harsh decree of annihilation brought sickness and weakness upon the people through their intense fasting and self-denial. Ultimately, however, the time they gained and the very suffering they endured were exactly what God used, through His providence, to save them from their enemies.

The culmination of this threat is its deep impact on a person's inner being. [מאירי] notes that while harm can certainly target the physical body, it also strikes the soul. The constant burden of physical troubles exhausts the spirit, preventing it from finding its proper rest. Building on his earlier point about assimilation, [מלבי״ם] points out that this overwhelming flood specifically targets the soul rather than the body. Assimilation does not threaten physical survival; instead, it completely consumes a person's soul and spiritual identity.
