תהלים, פרק קמ״ב, פסוק א׳

Psalms 142:1Sefaria

מַשְׂכִּ֥יל לְדָוִ֑ד בִּֽהְיוֹת֖וֹ בַמְּעָרָ֣ה תְפִלָּֽה׃

Deep within a dark cave, a man facing imminent death turns his thoughts toward God. This intense historical moment occurs during King Saul’s relentless pursuit of David across the rocky cliffs of the wild goats. While David and his men hide in the innermost recesses of a cave, Saul unexpectedly enters. During this incredibly tense encounter—the very moment David cuts the corner of Saul's robe—he composes this heartfelt prayer [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, המאירי ושטיינזלץ].

The nature of this composition is understood through several complementary ideas. From a musical and poetic standpoint, it is viewed as a song of deep contemplation [שטיינזלץ], or perhaps an instruction to sing the prayer to the melody of a familiar poem [אבן עזרא]. On a spiritual level, it serves as a powerful prayer meant to awaken the hearts of its listeners [המאירי].

Beyond its musical and spiritual qualities, the prayer highlights David’s extraordinary mental fortitude. Under normal circumstances, a person trapped by enemies and paralyzed by the fear of death is far too distracted to pray. Yet David possessed a remarkably steady heart that refused to give in to panic. His ability to deliver a fluid, uninterrupted prayer while hiding in the shadows of the cave was a testament to his inner strength. For David, maintaining this focus was a clear sign of success, giving him the absolute certainty that his prayer was welcomed and accepted by God [אלשיך].
