תהלים, פרק י״ז, פסוק ט׳

Psalms 17:9Sefaria

מִפְּנֵ֣י רְ֭שָׁעִים ז֣וּ שַׁדּ֑וּנִי אֹיְבַ֥י בְּ֝נֶ֗פֶשׁ יַקִּ֥יפוּ עָלָֽי׃

A plea is directed to God for shelter and protection against a severe, dual existential threat. Cruel forces are closing in from every direction, bringing both physical danger and spiritual peril. The primary approach among commentators is that these attackers are violent individuals seeking to rob and plunder. In a slightly different view, they are forces that completely surround and encircle their target [אבן עזרא]. The plea for God's intervention is made precisely because of this relentless robbery [רש"י]. Alternatively, the request for shelter serves as a direct continuation of a prior prayer, asking God to protect him as carefully as one guards the delicate pupil of an eye [מלבי"ם].

As the siege tightens, the true nature of the hostility comes into focus. The most widely accepted understanding is that this represents immediate mortal danger, with enemies closing in to end his life. However, the focus can also be placed on the intense motivation of the attackers; they trap him out of their own deep, burning desire to see him captured [אבן עזרא, מאירי].

Beyond the physical danger lies a profound spiritual threat. The ultimate goal of these enemies may be to force him to abandon his faith, thereby destroying him on a spiritual level [מאירי]. Taking a unique angle, the siege can also be understood as a coordinated attack on his character. The enemies gather to slander him, arguing that his past mistakes are proof that his soul is fundamentally flawed and impure [אלשיך].
