תהלים, פרק כ״ה, פסוק י״ב

Psalms 25:12Sefaria

מִי־זֶ֣ה הָ֭אִישׁ יְרֵ֣א יְהֹוָ֑ה י֝וֹרֶ֗נּוּ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ יִבְחָֽר׃

A person striving to walk a straight and good path does not walk alone, but receives direct help and guidance from God. The very idea of such an individual evokes a sense of wonder at their greatness and ultimate happiness [ביאור שטיינזלץ], pointing to a figure of true respect and importance [אבן עזרא].

What defines a life of true reverence for God? It begins with someone who actively desires and prepares their heart to achieve this state [רד״ק]. It also speaks to the individual seeking to turn away from past wrongs. Such a person should not worry about the difficult process of repentance, because God clearly recognizes their sincere intentions [מאירי]. A deeper perspective describes someone who has completely detached from the pursuit of worldly matters. This individual's sole ambition is spiritual fulfillment and the life to come, needing nothing more from the material world than the assurance that their family line will continue [מלבי״ם].

In response to this genuine desire and reverence, God steps in to teach and assist. This reflects the ancient wisdom that whoever makes an effort to purify themselves receives direct divine help [מצודת דוד].

When it comes to the specific path this person takes, there are different views on how the direction is chosen. The primary approach among commentators is that God directs the individual along a path that He Himself selects, ensuring they walk the most upright and good route [רש״י, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מאירי]. Conversely, other perspectives suggest that God supports the person on the path the individual chooses for themselves [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. There are countless ways to serve God, whether through dedicated study, acts of kindness, or giving charity. As long as a person's heart is focused on heaven, God will help them, clearing the obstacles and guiding them along whichever unique route they have chosen to serve their Creator [אלשיך].
