תהלים, פרק כ״ה, פסוק כ״ב

Psalms 25:22Sefaria

פְּדֵ֣ה אֱ֭לֹהִים אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל מִ֝כֹּ֗ל צָרוֹתָֽיו׃ {פ}

As the prayer draws to a close, the focus shifts outward, moving from a deeply personal plea to a broad national request for the entire nation of Israel [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This appeal is not limited to immediate struggles. It stems from a prophetic vision of the hardships that will eventually fall upon the nation [מאירי]. It serves as a timeless call for redemption, meant to be fulfilled whether during the poet's own lifetime or long after his death [רד״ק].

Moving from an individual focus to a collective one highlights a spiritual gap between David and his people. David has reached a spiritual level where he no longer prays to be saved from worldly troubles, understanding that these hardships actually elevate and expand his heart. However, he recognizes that most people have not achieved this level of detachment from the material world and the pain of suffering. Because of this, he cries out and begs for mercy on behalf of the public [מלבי״ם].

By appealing to God through the lens of strict justice, the prayer asks that the collective merit of the Israelites will protect them. The hope is that even if they face a strict judgment, God will still redeem and help them [אלשיך]. Furthermore, this expresses a desire that God will find an alternative way to atone for the people's sins and save them from their troubles, rather than using David's own suffering or death as an atonement for the rest of the nation [אלשיך].
