תהלים, פרק כ״ה, פסוק י״ד

Psalms 25:14Sefaria

ס֣וֹד יְ֭הֹוָה לִירֵאָ֑יו וּ֝בְרִית֗וֹ לְהוֹדִיעָֽם׃

Gaining access to the deepest mysteries of existence and supreme wisdom is not merely a matter of raw intellect. Instead, it demands a profound foundation of moral integrity and reverence for God. This inner bond between a person and the Creator serves as the key that unlocks spiritual perception, allowing an individual to discover hidden truths and receive divine guidance. The primary approach among commentators is that God's hidden ways and divine knowledge are revealed exclusively to those who revere Him. Pursuing wisdom alone falls short; without awe of God and adherence to His commandments, these profound secrets remain completely sealed [רד״ק].

This principle is vividly illustrated by the early sages, whose deep reverence granted them extraordinary inner insight. Their connection to God enabled them to intuitively grasp human experiences and physical realities they had never personally encountered, leading them to determine the correct practical law. In sharp contrast, historical figures who possessed brilliant minds but lacked this essential reverence failed to have the law established according to their opinions [תורה תמימה].

The nature of this hidden knowledge takes several forms. Some suggest it refers to sacred beliefs and traditions that are quietly passed down through the generations [מאירי]. Another perspective connects this wisdom to the afterlife, explaining that God grants a profound understanding of the soul's eternal nature, its future joy, and the reward that awaits it once it departs from the physical body [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם].

The divine promise extends beyond hidden mysteries, encompassing a clear covenant. The most prominent interpretation views this covenant as the revealed Torah. While certain truths remain private, the Torah was openly given to the nation, and God actively teaches its logical and rational foundations to those who revere Him [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מאירי]. Others understand this covenant as a more personal spiritual bond God forms with the human soul, illuminating its intellect and connecting it to higher realms [רד״ק]. It also stands as a permanent guarantee that spiritual abundance and the uncovering of secrets are not rare occurrences reserved for a select few, but are assured to anyone with genuine reverence [אלשיך]. Finally, on a historical level, this covenant points to the enduring physical promises God made to the forefathers of the nation, such as the inheritance of the land of Israel and the eternal continuation of the Davidic royal line [מלבי״ם].
