תהלים, פרק ל״ה, פסוק א׳

Psalms 35:1Sefaria

לְדָוִ֨ד ׀ רִיבָ֣ה יְ֭הֹוָה אֶת־יְרִיבַ֑י לְ֝חַ֗ם אֶת־לֹחֲמָֽי׃

Facing relentless persecution and powerful enemies often brings a person to a point of profound vulnerability, where survival clearly requires divine intervention [מאירי]. King David composed this prayer during his desperate flight from Saul, though it is also understood as a broader plea for the Jewish people during their long exile [רד״ק, מאירי]. In his distress, David asks God to take up his cause. He makes a twofold request: that God argue with those who quarrel with him [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מנחת שי], and that He physically battle the enemies who wage war against him [רש״י, מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ].

While this dual plea can be seen simply as poetic repetition expressing a single desperate cry for help [רד״ק], other perspectives find a precise breakdown of the threats David faced. One approach views this as a division between verbal and physical attackers. David was trapped in a moral dilemma: if he struck down his pursuers, he feared bearing the guilt of their deaths, but if he did nothing, he would be killed. Appealing to God's mercy, he asks Him to step in and handle both the harsh critics and the violent attackers, thereby sparing David from having to shed their blood with his own hands [אלשיך].

Alternatively, the two groups represent different levels of leadership within the enemy ranks. The instigators of the quarrel are the primary leaders of the conflict, such as Saul or Absalom, while the fighters are the soldiers and army personnel executing their orders [חומת אנך]. Another perspective understands the twofold request as a timeline of escalation. David prays for God to intervene early on, during the initial stages of a dispute, to prevent it from turning into a war. However, if the situation does escalate into a full military conflict, he asks that God take command and fight the battle on his behalf [מלבי״ם].
