תהלים, פרק ל״ה, פסוק י״ח

Psalms 35:18Sefaria

א֭וֹדְךָ בְּקָהָ֣ל רָ֑ב בְּעַ֖ם עָצ֣וּם אֲהַלְלֶֽךָּ׃

The desire for survival during times of danger is not rooted in a pursuit of material pleasures. Rather, the ultimate goal of being saved from enemies is to benefit others by making His miracles known. The promise of gratitude following such salvation does not remain a quiet, personal moment. It transforms into a grand public event where the miracle is openly declared and God is thanked before a massive gathering [אבן עזרא, רד״ק, מצודת דוד].

There are different perspectives regarding the identity of this vast assembly. One approach views the gathering through a national lens, picturing a moment where the entire nation of Israel unites and stands together as one [רד״ק]. Alternatively, this massive crowd carries a universal meaning, pointing toward a future era when all the nations of the world will gather and collectively turn to serve God with clear speech [מאירי].

The nature of this public gratitude evolves depending on the audience. Initially, the message reaches a vast crowd of everyday people. Before this general audience, the expression of gratitude takes the form of simple, direct thanks. However, as the audience shifts to include individuals of deep spiritual strength and wisdom, the response changes. Because these wise individuals possess the ability to understand spiritual matters more profoundly, the basic expression of thanks is elevated into a much higher, more complex level of praise [אלשיך].
