Psalms 35:22Sefaria

Surrounded by false accusations and the mockery of his enemies, David finds himself completely isolated. With no human allies to defend his name, he turns to God as the only witness who can bring his innocence to light [מאירי]. His enemies loudly claim to have seen his downfall, spreading false testimonies about events that never happened. In response, David looks to God, declaring that God is the one who saw the actual truth and serves as his true witness God observed the enemies' cruel joy, their ridicule, and their harsh words Because these attackers likely plotted behind David's back rather than confronting him directly, only God, from whom nothing is hidden, could truly witness their secret actions [אלשיך].

Knowing that God saw everything, David begs Him not to remain quiet or turn a deaf ear to his cries This request for God to speak up stands in direct contrast to the harmful speech of the enemies [אבן עזרא]. Commentators offer different views on what it means for God to break His silence. The primary approach among commentators is that David is asking God to step in, save him, expose the truth to the world, and fight back against his attackers However, another perspective suggests that David is actually asking God not to punish the enemies on his account, but simply to remove His own anger from David [אלשיך].

To complete his prayer, David asks God not to distance Himself. This final plea reinforces the call for God to publicly prove that David is right [מלבי״ם]. At the same time, it is a deeply personal request, asking that the Divine presence and intimate closeness never leave him [אלשיך].
