יְ֭הֹוָה בְּהַשָּׁמַ֣יִם חַסְדֶּ֑ךָ אֱ֝מ֥וּנָתְךָ֗ עַד־שְׁחָקִֽים׃

Against the dark backdrop of human wickedness, a sweeping vision of divine providence emerges, embracing the entire universe. Instead of dwelling on the failings of humanity, attention turns to the vast expanses of God's kindness and faithfulness, which weave together the laws of nature, human morality, and the higher spiritual realms.

God's kindness stretches from the earth all the way to the sky [רד״ק, מצודת ציון], reaching even into the highest and most hidden celestial layers [מלבי״ם]. The primary approach among commentators is that this reflects a universal care extending over all parts of creation. God's kindness surrounds everything, from the most elevated spiritual worlds down to the lowest depths. It does not stop at the stars or planets, as some ancient thinkers assumed [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, מאירי]. Rather, it is a gift granted to all living beings, including even those who act wickedly [רד״ק]. In stark contrast, another perspective views this vast distance as a sign of withdrawal. Because of the corrupt actions of the wicked, God completely removes His kindness from the earthly realm, pulling His faithfulness high into the distant skies, far out of human reach [רש״י].

Looking closer at how God interacts with the world, His faithfulness and kindness operate on multiple levels. On a natural and everyday level, His faithfulness represents the fixed laws of nature that guarantee the continued survival of all species. His kindness is the special, added care that ensures every living creature can find its food easily and close to home, without needing to struggle [רד״ק].

On a spiritual level, these concepts map onto the timeline of reward and punishment. Kindness represents the future reward waiting for souls in the World to Come. Faithfulness represents the demand placed upon people to believe, while still in this world, that ultimate justice and reward will arrive. This belief will reach its peak during the resurrection of the dead, which will be brought about by a reviving dew falling from the highest skies [אלשיך, מצודת דוד].

Ultimately, these ideas form a powerful response to the cynical claim that human actions have no impact on how the world is governed. At first glance, it might seem that the world runs on two separate tracks. One track consists of fixed natural laws associated with the visible sky, while the other involves occasional, miraculous interventions driven by divine kindness from the higher heavens. However, these two systems are deeply intertwined. The fixed, reliable laws of nature are themselves an expression of God's kindness and are directly influenced by human behavior, such as rain falling in response to good deeds. At the same time, God's miraculous, supernatural interventions are not random outbursts. They form a consistent, reliable, and lawful system that reacts directly to the moral choices people make [מלבי״ם]. In this way, the skies above serve as the ultimate source of both kindness and faithfulness for all of creation [אבן עזרא].
