תהלים, פרק ל״ו, פסוק י״ב

Psalms 36:12Sefaria

אַל־תְּ֭בוֹאֵנִי רֶ֣גֶל גַּאֲוָ֑ה וְיַד־רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים אַל־תְּנִדֵֽנִי׃

A heartfelt plea to God often seeks a shield against destructive forces, physical and spiritual alike, that threaten to shake a person's stability and distance them from the Creator. Enemies naturally operate by marching forward with their feet and striking with their hands [רד״ק, אבן עזרא]. The primary approach among commentators is that this request focuses on flesh and blood adversaries. Arrogant individuals march forward to oppress, fight, and harass [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מאירי]. Therefore, the prayer asks that the strong hand of the wicked will not uproot or drive a person away from their rightful place [מצודת דוד]. The ultimate goal of seeking this physical safety is to ensure that enemies do not disrupt a person's quiet contemplation of God's ways [רד״ק] or prevent them from spending time in the house of God [אבן עזרא].

In contrast to this physical threat, other commentators interpret the struggle as a deeply internal and spiritual one. Arrogance is not merely an external force approaching from the outside; it is a dangerous trait that can penetrate deep into the soul [מלבי״ם]. A person prays that they will not become haughty and rebel against God when blessed with an abundance of goodness [אלשיך]. It also serves as a caution against intellectual pride, where one mistakenly believes their mind can uncover divine secrets that are far beyond human understanding [מלבי״ם].

Within this internal struggle, the prayer seeks protection in the realm of everyday actions. It is a plea to avoid being influenced to act like the wicked [מלבי״ם]. Additionally, it is a request that the apparent success and wealth of bad people will not cause a person to question God's justice and stray from the path of righteousness [אלשיך]. The true purpose of this prayer is to maintain an unwavering closeness to God, ensuring that no external or internal force can trample upon a person's good deeds [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Taking a completely different direction, another perspective shifts the focus to the World to Come and the time of ultimate reward. In this view, the individual asks that the arrogant wicked will not stand nearby when rewards are distributed to the righteous. Furthermore, they pray that the wicked will not push them out of their rightful place when the time comes to inherit their generous portion of future goodness [רש״י].
