Psalms 36:9Sefaria

The connection between humanity and God transcends the physical realm, offering a deep and limitless spiritual nourishment. Those who choose to seek refuge close to God are rewarded with a divine abundance that stands in sharp contrast to the material pleasures of this world. The primary approach among commentators is to understand this experience as one of complete saturation and the ultimate fulfillment of human desire [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ], with an added dimension of continuous growth and empowerment [אבן עזרא]. This profound satisfaction flows directly from the richness and abundance found within God's own house

When exploring the exact nature of this house and the nourishment it provides, two central perspectives emerge. The primary approach views this as a description of a higher spiritual reality located in the World to Come, a realm inhabited by souls, angels, and the Garden of Eden According to this understanding, the abundance and delight are not physical sensations. Rather, they represent the ultimate attainment of knowing God, an absolute and eternal good completely free from any future evil, hunger, or thirst [רד״ק]. This future state serves as a reward for those who deprived themselves of fleeting worldly pleasures in order to dedicate their efforts to the Torah. In return, God fully satisfies them in the World to Come Furthermore, while the rest of creation is governed by the external laws of nature, human souls are treated as members of God's own household, dining on pure spiritual food directly at His table [מלבי״ם].

Conversely, another perspective grounds this experience firmly within the present world. In this view, the concept of God's house refers to individuals who isolate themselves in their own homes for the sole purpose of serving Him. For these devoted individuals, the very act of serving God provides rich nourishment for their souls, while the pursuit of knowing Him brings deep refinement [אבן עזרא].

The imagery of a flowing stream completes this picture of divine sustenance. A stream symbolizes a vast, continuous flow of blessing that never ceases These waters, often compared to the rivers of the Garden of Eden, represent a comprehensive divine abundance that includes the Torah, the Commandments, the resting of the Divine Presence, and prophecy. Through these channels, a person is able to reach the highest spiritual levels [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, the process emphasizes God's direct and personal involvement. He is the one who actively helps a person achieve this elevated knowledge [רד״ק], directly quenching the spiritual thirst of the souls and spirits of all who come to seek refuge in His presence [אלשיך, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
