תהלים, פרק ל״ו, פסוק ה׳

Psalms 36:5Sefaria

Moral decline is rarely a sudden event; rather, it is a gradual erosion of character that begins quietly within the mind. The descent starts with an internal fracture, a point where a person's faith no longer guides their thoughts or actions [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This creates a continuous cycle of wrongdoing that spans both day and night, taking root initially during the quiet hours of the night. Free from daily distractions, the time spent lying in bed provides a space for forming ideas. Instead of using this relaxed, comfortable time for honest reflection, a person might use it to plot acts of injustice [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. They calculate how to gain immediate personal profit through dishonest means [אלשיך]. Alternatively, these nighttime reflections can mark a deeper descent into heretical beliefs [מאירי].

What begins as a private thought in the dark soon transforms into deliberate action in the light of day. God places both the path of good and the path of death before humanity, yet the wicked willingly step onto the destructive route [רש״י]. This chosen path is entirely devoid of anything positive [רד״ק], often involving the direct violation of negative commandments [אבן עזרא]. The motivation behind this choice is deeply practical for the wrongdoer. They see that corruption and theft offer immediate financial stability and instant gratification, whereas the reward for following God's commandments is delayed for the future [אלשיך].

Ultimately, this cycle leads to a tragic final stage where the person loses the ability to reject evil. Human nature naturally leans toward truth and goodness. However, once a person allows unjust thoughts to linger or passively stands on the wrong path, their soul becomes corrupted. They no longer feel disgusted by wrongdoing and eventually begin to view evil as something positive [מלבי״ם]. This reflects the subtle method of the evil inclination, which initiates a person with actions that are simply improper, but ultimately leads them to a total embrace of wickedness [מצודת דוד]. In the end, the individual grows to love bad behavior at all times [רד״ק] and finds themselves completely unable to break away from the influence of people with corrupt beliefs [מאירי].
