תהלים, פרק נ״ד, פסוק ד׳

Psalms 54:4Sefaria

אֱ֭לֹהִים שְׁמַ֣ע תְּפִלָּתִ֑י הַ֝אֲזִ֗ינָה לְאִמְרֵי־פִֽי׃

When a person calls out to God in distress, their plea often takes the form of a dual request, repeating the desire to be heard and answered. This repetition serves as a powerful expression of longing, asking God to accept the supplication in its entirety. Some understand this twofold structure simply as a natural way to strengthen the request, with no essential difference between the two parts of the plea [רד״ק].

However, others find a deeper distinction between the internal and the external. True prayer represents the hidden intention of the heart, which is the core of the request, while the spoken words represent the physical articulation of those feelings [אבן עזרא, רד״ק].

Another approach focuses on a hierarchy within the plea. The act of hearing is directed toward the primary issue, while the act of listening is directed toward secondary details. The individual asks God to hear the main, formal prayer, but also to pay attention to the extra, accompanying words, even if they fall outside the bounds of an official, structured prayer [מלבי״ם, חומת אנך].

Finally, this dual request can be understood as a sequence of acceptance over time. First, the person asks God to hear the prayer immediately, even before the words are fully formed. Once that initial plea is accepted, the individual asks God to continue listening to the rest of the spoken words until the very end, simply because those words are pleasant and deeply desired by Him [אלשיך].
