Humanity holds an absolute and comprehensive dominion over the animal kingdom. Through intellect and resourcefulness, people are able to tame and control creatures of all kinds, from the familiar animals raised in local settlements to the untamed beasts roaming far from human civilization.

The primary approach among commentators is that flocks of sheep and goats, along with herds of cattle and oxen, hold a special place in this hierarchy because they are the closest to human daily life. These animals grow alongside people and supply the most fundamental human needs, such as food, clothing, and labor, making them more essential than animals used merely for riding [אבן עזרא, רד״ק]. This sphere of influence naturally extends to include all other domestic work animals, such as horses, donkeys, and camels, which are fully subject to human control.

Yet, human authority is not limited to the domestic creatures that people feed and nurture. Through human intellect, this mastery reaches out into the wild, extending over the beasts of the field that live far beyond human settlements [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In this context, the category of wild beasts is entirely inclusive. It encompasses all wild animals, including fierce predators, rather than just grazing herbivores [אבן עזרא]. Ultimately, this reflects a total, comprehensive dominion over every corner of the animal kingdom [מאירי].

While the primary focus rests on humanity's current mastery over nature, a different perspective sees a hint toward the distant future. According to this view, the imagery of domestic flocks and cattle standing alongside wild forest beasts symbolizes the Messianic era. It points to a time when the natural order will change, allowing the wolf to live peacefully with the lamb, and all animals to exist together in perfect harmony [אלשיך].
