תהלים, פרק ח׳, פסוק י׳

Psalms 8:10Sefaria

יְהֹוָ֥ה אֲדֹנֵ֑ינוּ מָה־אַדִּ֥יר שִׁ֝מְךָ֗ בְּכׇל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃ {פ}

A grand reflection on humanity's place in the universe naturally culminates in a profound expression of gratitude. The conclusion of the Psalm circles back to the very praise that opened it, summarizing a deep meditation on human uniqueness. After considering the divine kindness that grants small, lowly humans dominance over creation and an intellect comparable to higher beings, it is only fitting to return to thanking God for His absolute rule and careful watch over everything [רד"ק, מצודת דוד]. This deliberate repetition of the opening praise is not accidental. It teaches that such gratitude remains relevant and eternal across every generation, enduring for as long as the earth itself stands [אבן עזרא]. Recognizing God's immense power serves to highlight His complete mastery and providence over all of creation [מצודת דוד], while making His absolute uniqueness known throughout the world [המאירי].

Beneath this expression of praise lies a deeper cosmic struggle between angels and humans over closeness to God. Originally, the angels argued that God was their master alone, claiming that His greatness was already established on earth without any need to give the Torah to humanity. However, the conclusion of this meditation completely overturns their claim, proving that humanity is the true centerpiece of creation. Declaring God as our master reflects His direct ownership over human beings. Moreover, God's greatness is elevated throughout the earth specifically because humans exist. Without humanity, the world would lack both purpose and existence [אלשיך]. In the end, when Moses ascended to heaven to receive the Torah, even the angels were forced to concede to this reality. They ultimately adopted this exact expression of praise to glorify God, fully accepting His decision to entrust His wisdom to mankind [תורה תמימה].
