תהלים, פרק ח׳, פסוק ז׳

Psalms 8:7Sefaria

תַּ֭מְשִׁילֵהוּ בְּמַעֲשֵׂ֣י יָדֶ֑יךָ כֹּ֝֗ל שַׁ֣תָּה תַֽחַת־רַגְלָֽיו׃

Humanity occupies a unique position at the very peak of creation. This status is not defined merely by existence, but by the power, permission, and profound responsibility granted to govern the rest of the natural world. Humans are positioned as leaders and rulers who actively influence all of reality, possessing the authority to engage with and even alter God’s handiwork [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that this dominion applies to the earthly realm, granting humanity control over the animal kingdom [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מאירי], as well as the plant and mineral worlds [אבן עזרא]. However, others expand this authority to encompass the heavens. In this view, human rule includes the intellectual capacity to understand the stars and celestial systems [רד״ק]. It even extends to a spiritual ability to override the laws of nature in both the upper and lower realms, much like Joshua stopping the sun or wise men altering the properties of physical matter [אלשיך].

Beyond physical and intellectual control, humanity’s relationship with the universe exists on a deeper, symbolic level. A human being functions as a miniature world—a living likeness of the entire universe. All the wondrous laws and intricate designs found throughout creation are gathered within the human form. In this way, a person serves as a perfect reflection of all God’s handiwork [מלבי״ם].

To support this role, God placed all creatures in complete submission beneath humanity [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Yet, this arrangement is not simply about dominance; it reveals the ultimate purpose of existence. The world was formed in deliberate stages, moving from inanimate objects to plants, then to animals, and finally to the speaking human. Each preceding stage serves as a stepping stone toward the creation of humanity, the crown of the world. All earlier creations stand beneath humanity like a ladder, prepared to serve. This design is evident in how people interact with the animal kingdom: human reliance on animals corresponds directly to their proximity to human nature. Consequently, people utilize domestic animals far more frequently than wild beasts, birds, or fish, which exist further removed from the human environment [מלבי״ם].
